Satellite Overflow Shelter (SOS) 2021-22
The SOS Shelters (Satellite Overflow Shelters) will provide continuous 7-night shelter at:
Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church (Sun, Mon, Tues);
Immanuel Lutheran Church (Wed, Thurs, Fri);
and River City Church Saturday nights.
The hours have changed to 6pm-7:30am with staffing from 5:30pm-8:30am. This shelter will be staffed by Outsiders Inn through a grant from Clark County and in partnership with Council for the Homeless who will register people through the housing hotline (360-695-9677) up until 8pm. This year Communities in Motion is supplying a van that will have designated pickup sites for guests (all will wear masks). Please contact Adam Kravitz or Pr. Adrienne if you are interested in being trained to drive.
We will be hosting up to 15 people, which may include families, couples, and singles. In preparation for safety, we have a HEPA filter, dividers between spaces, a water cooler, and will be serving meals. People will wear masks except while eating or sleeping in their curtained-off section. We are excited to be able to offer a shower (located in our backyard and locked between uses). Our church shelter funds will be used to have Z Laundry do the laundry weekly and to purchase bulk bus tickets.
The many opportunities for volunteers to support SOS staff & shelter guests include:
SOS Task Force:
We have a wonderful task force from Immanuel, Islamic Society, and the Neighborhood Association who oversee the supplies, volunteer signups, and laundry. Please contact Shiela Osheroff about joining this task force.
Meal Volunteer:
Meal volunteers are asked to drop off the meal directly to the kitchen at 5:45pm. When preparing meals, please sanitize surfaces, wear a mask, and practice 20 second handwashing to be COVID-friendly. Suggested meals include lasagna, pizza, mac & cheese, sloppy joes, chili, tacos, casseroles, etc. This year we are part of the Outsiders Inn Meal Train which coordinates signups for the St. Paul WHO Shelter Site and the Immanuel Lutheran Church SOS Site. You are invited to provide a meal by signing up at: https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/04435v
or by contacting Pastor Adrienne for help signing up.
Evening Volunteer:
We are looking for one evening volunteer per night from 5:30-8:30pm to serve the meal, cleanup the kitchen and eating area, keep an eye on the things in the eating/sleeping room, and be an additional support person for the staff.
Morning Volunteer:
We are looking for one morning volunteer per shelter night from 6-8:30am to help the staff serve breakfast, assist guests as they depart, and clean up afterward.
