Pentecost is a holiday and season that celebrates the Holy Spirit, the power of God’s presence, and the “birthday of the church”. It’s the longest season of the Christian calendar, beginning in late spring after Easter and continuing until late fall. Pentecost is celebrated on a Sunday, usually in late May or early June, 50 days after Easter.
During Pentecost, the church focuses on the events and mission of Jesus’ three-year public ministry. The liturgical colors for Pentecost are red on Pentecost Sunday and green for the rest of the season. Green represents new life and growth, and the season after Pentecost, also known as Ordinary Time, uses green altar clothes and vestments to represent the growth in faith, joy, and gratitude that comes from following Jesus.
