He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go five, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." -Luke 4:18-19 (NRSV) Following Christ into the world, we serve alongside our neighbors to strive for justice, end poverty, and strengthen families. Safe Haven After-School Program
Mission: Providing a safe after-school environment, assistance with homework, healthy snacks, and enriching activities for elementary age students. Families Safe Haven was started in 2006 by Immanuel Lutheran Church with the goal of serving as a low- cost program for families of Marshall Elementary. This is a place where students learn and grow, build supportive relationships with adults who care, and have character development experiences. We offer exercise, socialization, nutritional snacks, homework assistance, and arts & crafts opportunities for the children in our care. Children from Marshall Elementary who are signed up for Safe Haven dropped off by school bus Monday-Friday at 3pm in front of the church, escorted by staff and volunteers to the building, and all programs and kids are led and supervised by our Program Coordinator and volunteers. Katie Cope is our Coordinator and she is supported by daily volunteers who interact with the kids and by the Safe Haven Committee in charge of supporting the program, assisting with planning, fundraising for support, and recruiting volunteers. Parents/guardians pickup children by 6pm. As an outreach ministry of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Safe Haven is an inclusive, faith-based program that welcomes and respects the culture and universal values of all families. Any form of discriminatory language, comments, or behavior is unacceptable. For more information about our program and costs, please contact the church offce at 360-694-3661, which will put you in touch with the Safe Haven Coordinator. Volunteers If you enjoy being with children we have an opportunity for you. Immanuel's after-school program is for children grades K thru 5 from Marshall Elementary. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. The program coordinator and her assistant are supported by volunteer helpers. Our preferred ratio is one adult to five children. Volunteers meet the children at the school bus stop and walk with them to the Safe Haven rooms. The children are treated to healthy snacks. Weather permitting, they play in the fenced yard; they play indoors when weather is inclement. Volunteers help the children with homework, arts and crafts, cooking lessons, and many other projects. A volunteer handbook defining volunteer activity is provided to each helper. Volunteer applicants can submit an application form to the Safe Haven program and must clear a background check. Contact the church office at 694-3661 if this is something that attracts your interest. “Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.'” ~Luke 18:16
